Byers, Schmalz Inducted into Wrestling Hall of Fame

2014 Mound Westonka High School graduate John Byers and 2016 graduate Lee Schmalz were inducted into the Mound Westonka Wrestling Hall of Fame before the final round of the Leopold Haglund Invitational on Feb. 9.

John Byers

Byers was a 2014  graduate of Mound Westonka High School, where he compiled 82 career wins. He was a four-time section placewinner, placed eighth in the Ninth Grade League State Tournament, and was a state entrant his senior season. Byers is a business analyst for Life Science Innovations in Willmar, Minnesota. John and his wife, Andrea, live in Spicer.

Lee Schmalz

Schmalz was a 2016 graduate of Mound Westonka High School, where he compiled 115 career victories. He was a four-time section placewinner, a three-time state entrant, and capped off his senior season with a sixth-place finish at state. Schmalz is a data scientist for Prenosis, Inc, and is planning to marry his fiancée, Natalie, this spring.
