The 16-1 Mound Westonka High School boys tennis team is headed to state after claiming the Section 2A championship title on May 20. The team started the day with a 6-1 win over the Litchfield Dragons in the section semifinals and ended with a 6-1 win over the Southwest Christian Stars in the finals, earning them a place at the team Class A State Tournament.
Every team member contributed in a huge way. The first doubles team of Sam Gaylord and Blake Reinbold and the second doubles team of Clark Hanson and Robbie Davis each had a win on the day, while the third doubles team of Ian Santoski and Will Salvati went 2-0. The four singles players - Carter Reinbold at No. 1 singles (ranked fourth in state), Charlie Paul at No. 2 singles (ranked sixth in state), Adam Kahmeyer (who remains undefeated for the season) at No. 3 singles and Johnny Range at No. 4 singles - all went 2-0 on the day.
“I am super proud of the boys," said coach Robert Paul. "They pulled together as a team, were focused and played disciplined tennis. This is a great way for these seniors to wrap up their MWHS tennis career, and coach [Brent] Reinbold and I couldn’t be happier for these boys.”
Individual section play begins Wednesday, May 22, where the team hopes to have more great play. The MSHSL Class A Boys Tennis Team Tournament will be held June 4 and 5 at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Find more information at www.mshsl.org/sports-and-activities/tennis-boys.
