The Mound Westonka High School math team qualified for and competed in the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League State Tournament for the first time this year. The meet was held March 11 at Spring Lake Park High School, where 16 teams from Class AA competed. The Westonka team had a great time, competed well, and finished in the top half of the tournament teams.

The team tournament consisted of two parts. Part one involved each student competing in two of four individual events. Each student had eight questions to answer, and their individual scores were added to the team total. Part two involved the team working together on six challenging questions.

"The team did a fantastic job summoning the energy and brain power required for this meet, especially considering how involved our students are in many other successful and time-consuming activities at MWHS," said coach Lisa Paul. "Many on this team were simultaneously preparing for and competing in state DECA, the state math tournament, and the world robotics competition!"

It was no small feat that all Westonka students scored points at state and contributed to a successful end to the 2023-2024 season. Looking to next year, the team will be losing three integral senior members who have scored well all season in difficult events: Anna Wood, Ingrid Wulf and Cormac Schaefer. However, the team hopes to be strong again with the core group of juniors Tanner Blume, Luke Carlson, Tor Erdahl and Rohan Nella; ninth graders James Marth and Henry Ruegemer; and eighth grader Zach VanNelson all returning.
