The Mound Westonka High School volleyball team won the Bloomington Jefferson tournament on Saturday, October 14.
Mound Westonka High School won the Bloomington Jefferson volleyball tournament on Oct. 14. The tournament consisted of 16 teams, and the White Hawks would go 4-0 for the day, playing Woodbury (2-1), Forest Lake (2-1), Andover (2-1) and Glencoe Silver Lake (2-0).
The White Hawks would have four players serve over 90 percent during the four games. Sophomore Bridget Budzius would lead with 97.4 percent, followed by junior Mia Weaver at 94.9 percent, sophomore Ashtyn Cupp at 93.3 percent and senior Annika Wier at 91.7 percent. MWHS would serve 25 aces, led by Weaver with eight, and sophomores Meaghan Kreiser (7), Avery Pearson (6) and Ashtyn Cupp (4).
It would be an exciting day with lots of action at the net. Weaver would lead the offense with 30 kills, followed by Kreiser (29), Budzius (18), senior Maquinna Peglow (14) and junior Taryn Peglow (12). There would be 20 blocks by Kreiser (7), Weaver (5), M. Peglow (4) and T. Peglow (4). Sophomore setter Avery Pearson would have 81 assists.
The back row would not be left out, as they dug up 105 balls. The defense was led by senior Kohral Bomar-Reese with 25 digs, followed by Weaver (22), Budzius (19), Cupp (14), Kreiser (14) and Pearson (11).
The winning streak would continue as MWHS played St. Anthony on Oct. 16. The White Hawks would win in straight sets (22-13, 25-6, 25-10). There would be 16 aces by seven players, and four players would serve at 100 percent (Kreiser, Pearson, Weaver and senior Marissa Nelson). There would be three blocks at the net, one each by M. Peglow, Nelson and T. Peglow.
The back row was busy, with eight players digging up 40 balls in just three sets. Bohmar-Reese would dig nine balls, followed by Weaver with seven and Budzius with six. Pearson would have 24 assists, while the team had 35 kills. Weaver would lead with 11, followed by Kreiser and M. Peglow with five each.
This marks the end of the regular season, and the White Hawks finished with a 21-5 record. Their first playoff game is Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
