Ava Daum Dominates her Sept. 17th Mountain Bike Race

MWHS sophomore Ava Daum won her mountain bike race on Sept. 17, finishing first out of 37 riders on a 6.5-mile racecourse at Xcel Mountain Bike Park in Shakopee. Daum won the Girls JV2 category, which is for 10 th – 12 th grade athletes.


Daum is a member of the Westonka mountain bike team, a middle and high school co-ed team that is part of the Minnesota Cycling Association (MCA). The Westonka team, comprised of 25 riders this season, is one of 89 teams in the league.


“We are very excited for Ava!” said Coach Brandon Reese, who is assisted by Joe and Amy Antilla, and Dawn Davis.


The mountain bike season runs from July through October. Westonka riders practice at local mountain bike trails, Lake Rebecca Park in Rockford, and Monarch Singletrack at Carver Park in Waconia. The team competes in five race events each fall around the state of Minnesota. The state championship will be held at Mt. Kato in Mankato on October 14-15.
