The Mound Westonka/Holy Family (MWHF) girls swim and dive team visited Orono Sept. 12 and hosted Litchfield Sept. 14.

Despite a tough loss to non-conference rival Orono, the meet was indeed one for the record books. For the second time in as many weeks, Holy Family’s Catherine Dueck (senior captain) set a pool record in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.06). “I just focus on my race," said Dueck after her record-breaking swim. "But I trained hard in the off-season, so it feels god to go fast."

Senior captain Abigail Ries finished fourth, and sophomore Amelia Olson took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay. Dueck also won the 100-yard backstroke, more than 2 seconds ahead of Orono’s second-place finisher. Junior captain Onna Sullivan finished fourth, and junior Peyton Schmidt finished sixth.

Orono swept the freestyle events of the evening. The 50-yard freestyle was a tight race, with first and fifth places separated by just one second. Junior Camille Ness took second for MWHF, followed by ninth graders Laney Hendrickson and Jaylen Juras. Ness, Sullivan and ninth grader Kayla Quandt finished third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle, with junior Grace Warden, ninth grader Charlotte Lake and ninth grader Chella Patterson finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior captain Annemarie Johnson finished the 500-yard freestyle in third place ahead of Hendrickson in fourth and Patterson in sixth.

Johnson, 2022 state finalist in the 100-yard breaststroke, took the top spot against Orono, with Olson in third and Quandt finishing sixth. Juras finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with teammates Warden and Ries finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

First place in the 200-yard freestyle relay went to MWHF’s Warden, Ness, Hendrickson and Dueck, with another team win in the 200-yard medley relay by Sullivan, Dueck, Juras and Johnson.  Warden, Nes, Sullivan and Johnson took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

A win at home Thursday against Litchfield brings MWHF’s conference record to (1-1). Coach Hanson’s relay lineups on Thursday were strong, earning first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Juras, Johnson, Ness and Warden, and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Sullivan, Schmidt, Patterson and Dueck. MWHF’s Olson, Dueck, sophomore Izzy Star and Sullivan placed second in the 200-yard medley relay.

MWHF swept the top three spots in the 200-yard IM (Sullivan, Ness and Schmidt finishing first, second and third, respectively), the 100-yard butterfly (Ness, Quandt and Olson finishing 1, 2, 3, respectively) and the 500-yard freestyle (Warden, Sullivan and Schmidt finishing first, second and third, respectively).

Dueck won the 100-yard freestyle with Johnson finishing second and Ries in fifth. Warden finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke ahead of Patterson in fourth and Juras in sixth. Johnson, Olson and Hendrickson finished second, third and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Star led MWHF in the 50-yard freestyle with a third-place finish, followed by Patterson in fourth and Quandt in sixth.

MWHF sophomore diver Erika Johnson brought execution and difficulty to the six-round diving event, resulting in a perfect week by taking first place in both meets. Ninth grader Jullian Schmitz finished second against Litchfield and sixth at Orono, with junior Callie Brown in third vs. Litchfield and sixth at Orono.

Next meet is Mound Westonka/Holy Family at Hutchinson on Thursday, Sept. 21.
