White Hawks Girls Lacrosse Starts Season With a Win

Westonka/Providence Academy girls lacrosse kicked off the 2021 season with an 18-5 home win against Mankato on Friday, April 16 at Haddorff Field.

Westonka/Providence Academy girls lacrosse kicked off the 2021 season with an 18-5 home win against Mankato on Friday, April 16 at Haddorff Field.

Senior captain Grace Peterson broke a new school record with 11 goals in a single game. Sophomore Nora Sipprell added three tallies to the scoreboard. Junior captain Lauren Hildahl, senior Lily Sipprell, senior captain Eleanor Young and sophomore Audrey Bernal scored one goal each. Peterson assisted with two goals and Sipprell and junior Liz Trubeck each added one assist. Sophomore goalie Kate Velander made nine saves against Mankato. The JV team also won their game 14-3.

After a day of rest, the White Hawks stormed their home field again on Monday, April 19 to play Henry Sibley/Gentry Academy and lost the battle 2-22. Peterson was the only player to score two goals and both were unassisted. It was a challenging game both offensively and defensively. Velander made 11 saves, but was not enough for the win. The JV team lost their game as well 6-12.

This year’s returning coaches include Jessie Heusinkveld and Tammy Serum. Andrew Kenady and Lindsey Minnahan are welcome new additions to the staff. Voted by their teammates, Grace Peterson, Lauren Hildahl, Eleanor Young and Frankie Walker are the selected team captains.

“This season is more exciting and anticipated because we missed out on our season last spring,” stated coaches Heusinkveld and Serum. “Our new players have picked up the game very quickly, and our returning players have already shown their leadership and skills on the field. We are looking forward to watching the team grow the rest of the season.”
