The Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team defeated the Southwest Christian/Richfield Stars on Jan. 30 in front of a packed crowd at the Chaska Community Center.
The Stars, who were celebrating homecoming weekend, got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the first period. In the second, Westonka freshman Ronan Childers scored to tie the game at 1, and a power-play goal from junior David Kalis gave the White Hawks their first lead of the night.
Senior Collin Hagen scored in the middle of the third period, putting the White Hawks up 3-1, and a power-play goal from senior Liam Grant increased Westonka's lead to 3. The Stars scored once more before pulling their goalie in the final minute of play. That's when junior Beckett Poikonen scored the fifth goal for the White Hawks. The final score was 5-2.
Senior goaltender Kaleb Halonen had 21 saves for the night. Grant had two assists. Hagen, Childers and junior Griffin Olson each had one assist.
The White Hawks are in Hutchinson on Saturday, Feb. 7, for their final conference game of the season. JV plays at 1 p.m. The varsity game begins at 3 p.m.
Westonka and Holy Family are tied for second place in the Wright County Conference. They trail top-ranked Delano, who is undefeated in conference play. Playoffs begin the week of Feb. 16.
