White Hawks Boys Hockey Defeats Southwest Christian

A hat trick from senior Liam Grant helped propel the Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team to a 6-3 win over Southwest Christian on Jan. 20.

A hat trick from senior Liam Grant helped propel the Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team to a 6-3 win over Southwest Christian on Tuesday. 

The White Hawks were up 2-1 at the end of the first period, thanks to goals from seniors Gavin Lamey and Colton Decker. They were held scoreless in the second period, but in the third, Grant found the net three times in less than six minutes, putting the score at 5-3. Senior Collin Hagen scored the sixth goal for the White Hawks in the final seconds of play. 

Junior Beckett Poikonen had four assists in the home game. Hagen and senior Luke Sunnarborg had two each. Junior Colin McMullin had one. Sophomore Cameron Kaluzne was in net. 

The JV boys fell to the Stars 5-2. Sophomore Jaxon Loycano scored in the first period, assisted by junior Anders Mjelstad. Junior Grady Olszewski scored a short-handed goal in the third period. Sophomore Max Wolke was the goaltender.

The White Hawks will be at Thaler on Saturday, Jan. 24, for a final home game before ending the regular season with five matches on the road. JV plays Minneapolis at 1 p.m. Varsity plays at 3 p.m.
