Boys Hockey Falls to Orono, Hutchinson

The Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team suffered two consecutive losses this week, falling to Orono on Jan. 10 and losing in overtime to Hutchinson on Jan. 13.

The Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team suffered two consecutive losses this week, falling to Orono on Saturday (Jan. 10) and losing in overtime to Hutchinson on Tuesday (Jan. 13). 

In the Orono game, the White Hawks took an early lead and led by a goal at the end of the first period. The score was tied at 3 going into the third period, but a Spartan scoring streak led to a final score of 6-4. Senior Collin Hagen scored twice in the game. The other White Hawk goals came from senior Liam Grant and freshman Ronan Childers. Grant, senior Logan Hill and junior Beckett Poikonen had assists.

The JV boys defeated the Spartans 4-3 in a physical game that saw both teams racking up 27 minutes of penalty time. An Orono player was ejected for a game misconduct during the second period. Two of Westonka's goals came from sophomore Richie LeGrange. Juniors Brendan Rashleger and Anders Mjelstad also scored. Junior Grady Olszewski and freshman Killian Mulleady had assists. 

In Tuesday's game vs. Hutchinson, Westonka was up 2-0 at the start of the third period, thanks to goals from Grant and senior Colton Decker. Then the Tigers scored two unanswered goals, sending the game into OT. The White Hawks battled for the win but couldn't overcome strong goaltending from the Tigers, who finally scored after 12 minutes of intense play. Senior Gavin Lamey had two assists in the game and junior David Kalis had one.

The JV matchup against Hutch also was tied at the end of the third period. The final score was 1-1. Sophomore Jaxon Loycano scored the lone Westonka goal. LeGrange and sophomore Aiden Huesmann had assists. 

The White Hawks host Albert Lea on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Thaler Arena. It is Senior Night, and the 2 pm varsity game will include an on-ice ceremony celebrating the senior players and their parents. JV plays at noon.
