In cold, rainy conditions at Pioneer Creek Golf Course on May 21, the Westonka White Hawks Boys Golf team battled through soggy fairways to finish just three strokes behind Delano, earning second place at the annual Pioneer Cup, which featured teams from Delano, Westonka, Watertown-Mayer, and Dassel-Cokato.
Junior Luke Sunnarborg led the charge for Westonka with a 72, capturing medalist honors and finishing first overall—his second consecutive year winning the Pioneer Cup. Sunnarborg recorded four birdies on the day, including a clutch birdie putt on the final hole to bring him back to even par.
Just behind him was sophomore Hudson Pundsack, who carded a strong 75 to tie for second place individually. Freshman Erik Flom shot an 85, while juniors Dillon Peterson and Logan Hill each posted 86s, and sophomore Chase Lee added an 87 to round out the team's scorecard.
The performance came just two days after Westonka competed in the Burl Oaks Invitational on May 19, a tournament featuring a deep 15-team field. The White Hawks finished 11th overall in a highly competitive event that was won by Minnetonka, with Eden Prairie taking second. Pundsack led Westonka with a solid 80, placing 17th overall. Juniors Tyler Spotts and Logan Hill shot 87 and 91, respectively, while freshman Leif Kellner also posted an 87, and sophomore Chase Lee added a 92 in the cold, windy conditions.
The White Hawks now set their sights on the two-day Section meet beginning May 29 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
