Freshman Ethan Aud battles on the mound against Hutchinson
The Westonka baseball squad lost three games to teams in the Wright County conference East division, dropping them to 2-5 in the conference and 4-9 overall.
On Monday, May 5, the White Hawks traveled to Victoria to take on the Holy Family Fire. The White Hawks got down early but kept chipping away at the Fire lead, but were unable to prevail in a 10-6 loss. Senior Isaac Aud started on the mound and was relieved by senior Reece Matheny, and senior Grayson Van Nelson upped his slugging percentage with two doubles to lead the White Hawks at the plate.
The White Hawks returned home to Soule Field and hosted the Delano Tigers on Tuesday, May 6, but the home field advantage wasn’t enough as all three phases of pitching, defense and hitting struggled in a 14-1 loss. Sophomore Jacob Nye got the start on the mound and suffered his first loss of the season, with Matheny again coming in to relieve. Senior Max Kraay homered for the only White Hawks run.
The White Hawks went back on the road on Thursday, May 8, traveling to Hutchinson to take on the Tigers, who were undefeated in conference play. The White Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Tigers were able to put up five runs in the home half of the third inning, and piled on seven more runs in the sixth for a 12-4 victory. Freshman Ethan Aud made his first varsity start for the White Hawks with an impressive debut, and was relieved by seniors Cole Munsterteiger and Mason Sebasky. Senior Cole Drill pasted the right field line for his team-leading third triple of the season. "It was a tough week for the squad, but we learned a lot. We are finding that our bats are starting to become more consistent, but we need to get back to what gave us many chances to win early in the season, which is great starting pitching and solid defense. The focus will always remain on trusting the process, and if we can start to become more consistent in all phases of the game, we still believe we can make some noise coming down the home stretch here leading into sections," said head coach Pat Regan.
The White Hawks will host Holy Family on Tuesday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m. for Senior Night, and they begin first round action at the Delano Wood Bat Tournament on Friday, May 16, at 5 p.m. against Minneapolis South.
