The Mound Westonka boys golf team opened their 2025 season with a unique challenge—a team-format tournament at Timber Creek Golf Course in Watertown on April 10. Despite chilly, windy conditions with temperatures in the 40s, the White Hawks showed early-season promise, finishing third out of 11 teams. New London-Spicer took first place, with Hutchinson finishing second.

Unlike a traditional meet, this season opener paired players into two-person teams and featured a creative 18-hole format: the first six holes were played as a scramble, the next six as best ball, and the final six as alternate shot. The format emphasized teamwork, strategy, and adaptability—making for a fun and challenging debut.

Westonka’s lineup featured three squads: juniors Luke Sunnarborg and Dillon Peterson, junior Wes Foley and sophomore Hudson Pundsack, and freshmen Leif Kellner and Erik Flom.

The Sunnarborg/Peterson duo led the team with an impressive 74, earning fourth place among the 33 teams. Foley and Pundsack also played well, posting a 78 to finish 10th overall, while Kellner and Flom shot an 85, landing in 18th place.

Head coach Andy Atkinson shared, “We have a record number of golfers out for the team this year (48 players in grades 7-12). It has been a very enjoyable group to work with. I anticipate there being a lot of intrasquad competition to fill out the varsity lineup. We have an excellent balance of both veteran and young players who will contribute much to the team.”

The White Hawks will return to traditional stroke play for their next meet on April 17 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
