The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad traveled to Orono High School on Jan. 23 for a triangular meet and came away with two dual meet wins. In the first round, the White Hawks defeated Benilde-St. Margaret’s 53-12, and then proceeded to defeat Orono 48-30 in the finale. “We had a few guys out so we needed to wrestle well, and we took care of business,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Winning both matches on the evening were Deacon Ramthun, Levi Hays, Daniel Wechter, Cole Munsterteiger, Al Zuniga-Lopez, Mason Merrit and John Seemann.

The White Hawks competed in the Orono Invitational on Jan. 25, placing seventh out of a 12-team field. “There were some tough teams there, and with a few guys out of the line-up, it was a respectable finish," said assistant coach Eric Rodelius. Placing for the White Hawks were: Mason Merritt, fifth place; Levi Hays, fourth place; Al Zuniga-Lopez and Phillip Pisarchuk, third place; and Deacon Ramthun and Cole Munsterteiger, second place. Seventh grader Ben Kromenhoek won his weight class in the JV division, while junior Delaney Parker was the champion in her weight class in the girls division.

The freshmen squad competed in the Ninth Grade League regional tourney in Hutchinson on Jan. 25. Freshman Brady Kirkpatrick won the 133-pound championship, earning his way to the Ninth Grade League state tournament in Champlin Park on Saturday, February 1. Also placing for the White Hawks were: Connor Coleman, eighth place; Lilyanne Ray, fourth place; and Charlie Ogle, third place. “We had a great tournament, winning a lot of matches and getting Brady to state," said freshman coach John Wardlow. "He is wrestling well, and I’m excited about his chances there."

The White Hawks will resume action this Thursday, Jan. 30, when they host Delano and Tri City United in a triangular meet. Start time is 5 p.m.
