Sept. 17 was a date to remember for Mound Westonka High School junior volleyball player Avery Pearson, who achieved her 1,000th career assist in a home game against Rockford. The White Hawks would win in straight sets 25-15, 25-21 and 25-13.
There would be 10 aces - three by senior Mia Weaver, and two each by juniors Meaghan Kreiser and Bridget Budzius. The remaining aces were by juniors Ashtyn Cupp, Avery Pearson and sophomore Evelyn Hendrycks. Junior Lizzy Huls would have an impressive serve receive rating of 3.0.
Two players would have a hitting percentage over 50 percent. Junior Lexie Rehman hit at .545, and Weaver at .520. The team would have 34 total kills - 14 by Weaver, seven by Rehman, five by Kreiser, with five additional players contributing to the kill total.
Defense was strong both at the net and in the back row. Senior Taryn Peglow and junior Maria Neumann would lead the team in blocks, while Weaver and Budzius would lead the team in backrow digs. Combined, Pearson and Cupp would have 24 assists.
The White Hawks' Homecoming game was Thursday against Jordan, and the team was proud to put up another straight set win (25-17, 25-20, and 26-24). It got awfully close in the third setting, requiring extra points to close out the win.
The Hawks would have 12 aces - four by Weaver, three by Kreiser, two each from Budzius and Cupp, one by Pearson. Budzius and Weaver would put up a strong defense on serve receive with ratings of 1.89 and 1.85, respectively. Outside hitters Weaver and Kreiser would lead the kill count with 14 and seven. Middle blockers Rehman and Peglow did not want to miss out, getting six and five kills each. To round out the front row, Neumann would contribute six kills from the right side.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the White Hawks were maximizing the front row defense with 10 blocks. Rehman and Neumann had four blocks each, and Peglow came in for two clutch blocks, denying the Jaguars points. Pearson and Cupp would have a combined 27 assists. The back row had PHENOMENAL defense with 50 digs. The leaders being Weaver (18), Kreiser (12), Pearson (11), and Budzius (9). Two wins this week would make the White Hawks record 15-2.
