The Westonka–Holy Family (WHF) girls swim and dive team kicked off the 2024 season on Saturday, hosting the 8th Annual Tim Daly Invitational. Three other schools participated in the event: Delano, Orono and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
It appears WHF will have its work cut out for it, battling its conference rival Delano. Delano bested WHF on Saturday by a score of 719 to 709. Orono finished third with a score of 483, followed by Benilde-St. Margaret’s with 389.
In the relays, the events with the most points on the line, WHF took second in the 200-yard medley (O. Sullivan, M. Dongoske, C. Ness, G. Warden), third in the 200-yard freestyle (C. Ness, A. Johnson, G. Warden, O. Sullivan) and third in the 400-yard freestyle (L. Hendrickson, R. Betts, M Dongoske, A. Johnson).
Individually, sophomore Laney Hendrickson had a good swim in the 200-yard freestyle, winning with a 2:02.31. Ninth grader Mia Dongoske won the 200 IM with a 2:18.46. She also took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.70. Junior Erica Johnson bested a deep field of divers with a combined score of 212.10.
The next test comes on Thursday, Sept. 5, when the team hosts a dual meet against Watertown-Mayer.
