2024 Westonka White Hawks volleyball team
As the first serve of the 2024 high school volleyball season approaches, the Westonka White Hawks are brimming with confidence and anticipation. The buzz around the program is electric, fueled by the team’s stellar performance last year and a roster that promises even greater heights.
In 2023, the White Hawks delivered a season to remember. With a final record of 22-6, they not only achieved their best finish since 2012 but also made waves across the state by reaching the semifinals of the playoffs. In a section loaded with talent, including four of the top 10 teams in the state, Westonka's resilience was evident as they took sets off two of those powerhouse teams. It was a season that underscored their potential and set the stage for an exciting 2024 campaign.
Leading this year’s charge are captains Taryn Peglow (senior), Mia Weaver (senior), and Bridget Budzius (junior). Their leadership will be instrumental as they guide a squad that blends seasoned experience with promising new talent. They are joined by fellow seniors Alicia Clobes and a strong group of juniors including Avery Pearson, Ashtyn Cupp, Maria Neuman, Lexie Rehman, Hannah Birkins and sophomore Evie Hendrycks.
Among the returning players, Meaghan Kreiser stands out as a dynamic force. Last year, Kreiser earned All-Conference honors with a spectacular performance that included 43 aces, a 92% serving accuracy, 234 kills, and a .326 hitting percentage. Her contributions were pivotal, and expectations are high for her to build on that success this season. Meanwhile, Mia Weaver also made her mark with an All-Conference Honorable Mention accolade, boasting 55 aces, a 91% serving accuracy, 248 kills, and a .225 hitting percentage. Her defensive prowess was equally impressive, with 277 digs, 34 blocks, and a 1.99 serve receive rating.
Head coach Ashley Schroeder, entering her seventh year at the helm, is optimistic about the upcoming season. “We have a strong team returning—eight letter-winners from last year and several players with significant varsity experience,” Schroeder noted. “Their leadership and experience are crucial as we aim to build on last year’s excellent record.”
Shroeder also highlighted the challenging competition in their section, particularly noting the formidable Delano and Northfield teams. “We held our own against them last year, and I’m looking forward to our rematch," she said.
The White Hawks coaching staff, a blend of seasoned veterans and fresh perspectives, adds another layer of depth to the program. Freya Klein returns as the JV coach, Emily Holst will guide the B squad, and Emily Ruud will lead the C squad. Schroeder praised her staff, saying, “We have a coaching team with extensive experience both as players and coaches. Their positive and competitive approach is invaluable in developing our players at every level.” Developing younger players has been key to improving and strengthening the White Hawks’ program. Volleyball numbers continue to grow with over 40 students participating in grades 9-12.
With a potent mix of returning talent, emerging stars, and a dedicated coaching staff, the Westonka White Hawks are poised to make a significant impact this season. As the team prepares for the challenges ahead, the excitement around the program is palpable. Fans and players alike have reason to believe that 2024 could be another banner year for the White Hawks. The road to success is paved with dedication, and this team is ready to seize the moment and make their mark on the volleyball court.
