The Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer boys hockey team took time to celebrate their graduating seniors before their 2-0 victory over Pine City on Feb. 10.
This group has dedicated years of hard work to the sport they love and their absence will be felt next year. The senior class includes: captains JJ Scherven, Jackson Henningsgaard, Jacob Hansberger and Evan Ross; forwards Aleksandr Barnes and Jack Jewison; defensemen Charlie Lund and Brandon Zierke; goal tenders Jack Moch and Dom Walton; and the glue that has been holding this squad together for three years, indispensable team manager Paige Thurston. These talented individuals will be moving on to pursue a number of interests, including juniors hockey, college, real estate and engineering. We even have four future pilots in this group!
The Senior Night event included on-ice introductions with their parents, a floor hockey tournament and meal at Mound Westonka High School. This was SUPPOSED to be a pond hockey tournament, but unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t get the memo.
“Our senior group has contributed so much to our hockey program,” said head coach Jeff DeGree. “They all served important roles and contributed significantly to our team identity this year. They will be missed.”
Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer ended the season in second place in the Wright County Conference with a conference record of 5-2-1 and overall record of 12-13-1. The sixth-seeded White Hawks fell to No. 3 Minneapolis 6-1 in the Section 2A quarterfinals on Feb. 21.
