A long tradition of community service and teamwork continued when the Mound Westonka High School girls and boys hockey teams held their 21st Annual Hockey Against Hunger Food Drive on Dec. 9.
Generous hockey fans, players and families donated food and monetary donations during the full day of hockey games, both boys and girls varsity and junior varsity, against Morris Area. White Hawks players from each team worked at each other's games to accept donations, load food into cars, and deliver it all to the Westonka Food Shelf the next day.
The food drive was a great success with 444 pounds of food and over $200 collected for people and families in need. As the captains for the boys’ team delivered the food, they learned from Westonka Food Shelf staff that every dollar donated to the Westonka Food Shelf can purchase $9 worth of groceries, giving the donations even more food buying power.
Hockey Against Hunger 2023 not only helped fill the shelves at the Westonka Food Shelf but helped fill the hearts of hockey players and fans who gave a super effort to a worthy cause.
