Five New Members Inducted into Mound Westonka Athletic Hall of Fame

The Mound Westonka High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was officially inducted Sept. 23 at a morning ceremony at the Westonka Performing Arts Center.

The Mound Westonka High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was officially inducted Sept. 23 at a morning ceremony at the Westonka Performing Arts Center. On hand to receive their awards were: Dave Eiss, class of 1960; Rachel (Foley) Weyer, class of 2002; Pat Furlong, coach; and Jim Halvarson, coach and class of 1980. Accepting on behalf of former Activities Director Larry Exel, who passed away in 2006, were his wife, Sharon, daughter Kathleen Lomar Exel and granddaughter Maggs Lomar Exel.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremony was held during Homecoming Week in conjunction with the annual Homecoming Alumni Breakfast at MWHS. Westonka Activities Director Jeff Peterson highlighted the accomplishments of each member in front of a crowd of alumni, family members and staff.

DAVE EISS - CLASS OF 1960

  • Dave was a four-year letter winner at Mound High School in boys tennis, golf and basketball. He also lettered one year in football as quarterback, leading to a full-ride scholarship at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
  • He was captain of both the basketball and football teams in his senior year at MHS, and in college was named football co-captain and Most Outstanding Senior.
  • Dave was the winner of the Yost Award in 1960
  • He also served as student council vice president and acted in the junior class play.

LARRY EXEL - ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

  • Larry began teaching at Mound Westonka in 1967 and coached basketball and baseball over the next 29 years. He served as assistant principal and then as activities director from 1989 to 1996.
  • After retiring, Larry continued to work MWHS sporting events, organize the Tri-Metro & Metro Alliance Conferences, and run MSHSL tournaments.
  • When he died of cancer in 2006, Larry left a scholarship through the Westonka Basketball Boosters that helps support the post-secondary education of a deserving male and female basketball player each year.

RACHEL (FOLEY) WEYER - CLASS OF 2002

  • Rachel was the 2002 winner of the Athena Award at MWHS in girls basketball, cross country and softball. She was voted captain in all three sports, including being a three-year captain in basketball.
  • Rachel is the all-time leading scorer in Mound Westonka girls basketball history with 1,493 points. She was a three-time All- Conference selection in basketball and was selected for the 2002 Minnesota 2A All-Star Team.
  • Rachel was a three-time state qualifier in cross country and three-time All-State selection. She finished in 10th place (1998), second place (1999) and 12th place (2000) among the state's best 150 runners. She was also the Tri-Metro Individual Champion four straight years.

PAT FURLONG - COACH

  • Pat played hockey and graduated from the U of M in 1966. He started his teaching career in Westonka later that year, teaching distributive education, coordinating the on-the-job training program, advising the DECA program and coaching hockey.
  • He served as head coach for the MWHS boys hockey team for 30 years, winning eight conference championships. He also coached the Mound Westonka/Orono girls team for 10 years, winning two conference championships. Pat has also been very active in youth sports in the community.
  • Pat is a member of the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame for both boys and girls hockey.

JIM HALVARSON - COACH, CLASS OF 1980

  • As an athlete at Mound Westonka High School, Jim was a multi-year letterman in football, hockey and baseball and won the Yost Award in 1980. He played in the 1980 Minnesota All-Star baseball game and was All-Conference in all three sports. He went on to play baseball and football at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Jim has been a dedicated and successful baseball, football and hockey coach in Westonka for over 30 years.
  • Jim also taught physical education at Shirley Hills Primary School for 31 years, retiring in the 2019-2020 school year.
