Mound Westonka Announces Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022

The Westonka Activities Department is proud to announce its 2022 Athletic Hall of Fame Class.

The Westonka Activities Department is proud to announce its 2022 Athletic Hall of Fame Class. Each year, the district recognizes individuals who have outstanding accomplishments for or as a representative of Mound Westonka High School. The goal of the Mound Westonka Athletic Hall of Fame is to provide a link between the past school members and the future.

Dave Eiss, Class of 1960

  • Dave was a four-year letter winner at Mound High School in boys tennis, golf and basketball. He also lettered one year in football as quarterback, which led to a full-ride scholarship at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
  • He was the captain of both the basketball and football teams in his senior year.
  • Dave was the winner of the Yost Award in 1960 as the outstanding senior male athlete at MHS.
  • Dave never missed one of his children's games while they attended Mound Westonka High School. His grandchildren also had their proud grandfather in the stands for every game.

Larry Exel, Activities Director

  • Larry began teaching at Mound Westonka in 1967 and coached basketball and baseball over the next 29 years. He served as assistant principal and then as activities director from 1989 to 1996.
  • Larry was dedicated to the students and staff of MWHS and was an unintentional mentor to many coaches during his career.
  • After retiring, Larry continued to work MWHS sporting events, organize the Tri-Metro & Metro Alliance Conferences, and run tournaments for the Minnesota State High School League.
  • When he died of cancer in 2006, Larry left a scholarship through the Westonka Basketball Boosters that helps support the post-secondary education of a deserving male and female basketball player each year.

Rachel (Foley) Weyer, Class of 2002

  • Rachel was the 2002 winner of the Athena Award as the outstanding senior female athlete at Mound Westonka High School in girls basketball, cross country and softball. She was voted captain in all three sports, including being a three-year captain in basketball.
  • Rachel is the all-time leading scorer in Mound Westonka girls basketball history with 1,493 points. She was a three-time All-Conference selection in basketball and was selected for the 2002 Minnesota 2A All-Star Team, although she did not participate.
  • Rachel was a three-time state qualifier in cross country and three-time All-State selection. In 1998, 1999 and 2000, she finished in 10th place, 2nd place and 12th place, respectively, among the state's best 150 runners. She was also the Tri-Metro Individual Champion four straight years.

Pat Furlong, Coach

  • Just about every Westonka hockey player in the '80s and '90s had Pat Furlong as a coach. During his long coaching career, Pat served as head coach for the Mound Westonka High School boys hockey team and the Mound Westonka/Orono girls team. Pat has also been very active in youth sports in the community.
  • Pat started his teaching career in Westonka in 1966, retiring in 2005.
  • He was known to be honest, straight forward and dedicated to the school and his students.
  • Pat's children all graduated from MWHS and he still lives in town.

Jim Halvarson, Coach

  • As an athlete and coach, Jim has given essentially his entire life to enhance sports at Mound Westonka.
  • As an athlete at Mound Westonka High School, Jim was a multi-year letterman in football, hockey and baseball and won the Yost Award in 1980. He played in the 1980 Minnesota All-Star baseball game and was All-Conference in all three sports. He went on to play baseball and football at Gustavus Adolphus College.
  • Jim has been a dedicated and successful baseball, football and hockey coach in Westonka for over 30 years.
  • Jim also taught physical education at Shirley Hills Primary School for 31 years, retiring in the 2019-2020 school year.
