The White Hawks boys and girls Nordic ski teams both finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Section 6 Meet February 10 at Hyland Lake Park in Bloomington. The boys teams from Wayzata and Armstrong advanced to the state Nordic meet, and St. Louis Park and Hopkins advanced to state for girls.

New this year, a relay was added to the section meet and two individual qualifying spots were eliminated. “This made for LOTS of excitement and is a great addition to the event, but has made it much more difficult for a small team to advance any individuals to state,” said White Hawks head coach Sue Harrison.

MWHS senior Lance Nemecek finished in the heartbreaking position of being the fifth individual finisher, when only four individuals qualified for state. Nemecek finished 12th overall in the pursuit. Senior Josh Engesser finished 23rd, ninth-grader Isaac Hays was 37th, ninth-grader Miles Lund was 45th and senior Henry Kluever was 55th. Sophomore Anna Wood led the White Hawks girls pursuit in 22nd place, with senior Anika Budzius close behind in 25th and sophomore Ingrid Wulf in 42nd.

The White Hawks relay teams of seniors Max Epsky and Haakon Erdahl for boys and senior Anna Elliott and sophomore Averie Zealley for girls both made it to the finals. “The relays were head-to-head competition, and our skiers were fierce and competitive and really went for it,” said Harrison. “We couldn't be more proud of how they raced!”

The season wraps up Monday for the White Hawks with the annual costume meet at Como Park. The Nordic teams have many graduating seniors and all will be missed next season.
