Mound Westonka had a strong performance at the Twin Cities Nordic Conference Nordic Skiing Championships at Theodore Wirth Park on January 28. The White Hawks boys and girls teams both finished third behind the powerhouse teams of St. Paul Highland Park and St. Paul Central.

“I am extremely proud of these teams,” said White Hawks head coach Sue Harrison. “The MWHS boys and girls varsity teams skied and raced very well!”

The competitors were excited to have a relay event added to the program this year. The MWHS boys relay of Max Epsky and junior Adrian Overbo finished third in a dramatic race to the line. The girls relay of sophomore Anna Wood and foreign exchange student Felicia Klassen finished fourth overall.

The MWHS boys team finished third overall in an eight-team field. In the pursuit race, senior Lance Nemecek had an outstanding day, finishing seventh overall. Nemecek was the only skier not on one of the top two teams to receive All-Conference honors.

Senior Haakon Erdahl also had an excellent day, receiving All-Conference Honorable Mention with his 13th-place finish in the pursuit race. Senior Josh Engesser was one place out of honorable mention, finishing in 17th.

MWHS scorers for the boys were Nemecek, Erdahl, Engesser, Epsky and Overbo. Also racing were ninth-graders Isaac Hays and Miles Lund, sophomore Axel Anderson and senior Henry Kluever.

The MWHS girls finished third in a nine-team field, which was dominated by the state runner-up team from Highland Park. Scoring for the White Hawks in the pursuit were senior Anna Elliott and sophomore Averie Zealley in 18th and 19th place, respectively. They just missed the honorable mention awards with their strong races in skate and classic.

Senior Anika Budzius finished in 24th place, and Wood and Klassen also scored in the relay. Also racing for the White Hawks were ninth-grader Stella Miner and sophomore Ingrid Wulf.
