DECA Districts 2022

A total of 120 students from Mound Westonka High School will be competing in this year’s state DECA competition, following a very competitive showing at the District III DECA Conference Jan. 9 at Bloomington Jefferson High School.

Mound Westonka competes in DECA District III along with the Blake School and Bloomington Jefferson, Cooper, Edina, Minnetonka, Prior Lake, Richfield and Shakopee high schools. There are 573 students in the DECA District, meaning that 10 students in each event advance to state. MWHS was entered in 36 of the 40 events held at the district level, with 134 students competing. Of those students, 120 are advancing to the state competition.

The Westonka team placed in the Top 10 in all 36 events they entered and placed in the Top 3 in 30 events. Westonka earned 17 first-place, 18 second-place and 13 third-place honors.

"After being virtual last year, it was so awesome to compete in person again," said advisor Sue Simonson. "Our students were well-prepared and excited to get to show their hard work to their judge. We are incredibly proud of all of our students!"

The 2022 DECA State Career Development Conference will be held March 6-8 at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency, where over 3,000 DECA students from across Minnesota will compete.

Participation in DECA develops leadership skills, management skills, civic consciousness, job responsibility, motivation to excel, good work habits, critical thinking and problem solving. DECA is advised by Simonson, Eric Doerhoefer, Julie Thomas and Lizzie Williams.
