White Hawks Track & Field Performs Well at Conference Meet

Junior Cris Christensen was the Conference Champion in the long jump at the May 25 Wright County Conference East meet with an amazing jump of 21 feet 1 inch.

The White Hawks girls 4×200 team of sophomore Abbie Hollenstein, junior Allison Soule, sophomore Micah Boyce and ninth-grader Makenna Seitz took first place at the conference meet.

The Westonka track and field team competed at the Wright County Conference East meet on Tuesday, May 25. The White Hawks girls team had its best team performance in a decade and placed third overall. The boys team was seventh.

Junior Cris Christensen was the Conference Champion in the long jump with an amazing jump of 21 feet 1 inch. The girls 4×200 team of sophomore Abbie Hollenstein, junior Allison Soule, sophomore Micah Boyce and ninth-grader Makenna Seitz dropped six seconds off their seed time to earn first place in the relay. Those first-place finishes earn those athletes All-Conference honors.

Senior Ainhoa Toquero and junior Elizabeth McCue earned All-Conference Honorable Mention for their performances at the meet. Toquero was second in the 100 hurdles, third in the long jump and sixth in the high jump. McCue finished second in the shot put.

The girls had many different athletes place in multiple events to help earn their third-place finish. In order to score in the meet, an athlete must place in the Top 8. Athletes placing third were eighth-grader Avery Olson (100-meter dash), the 4×100 relay team of sophomore Ellen Pruitt, seventh-grader Ali Butler, ninth-grader Natalie Miner and Olson, as well as the 4×400 relay team of Seitz, Hollenstein, Soule and eighth-grader Audrey Kirscht.

Fourth-place finishes include Boyce (100-meter dash), Soule (200-meter dash), Hollenstein (400-meter dash), and junior Anna Elliott in the 300 hurdles.  The 4×800 team of Kirscht, eighth-grader Brooke Garlock, ninth-grader Annika Weir and junior Megan Wanner placed fifth, running a strong race.

Sixth- through eighth-place finishers for the girls include sophomore Laura Sunnarborg, who was sixth in the 1,600 and 800, Pruitt (100-meter dash), Elliot (100-meter hurdles), and sophomore DJ Christensen in seventh place in the shot put.

Scoring for the boys team was Cris Christensen (first in long jump, third in 100-meter dash and sixth in high jump). The 4×200 relay team of Christensen, junior Jason Spaeth, ninth-grader Brett Bartkowicz and junior Ben Tice finished third. The 4×800 team of junior Lance Nemecek, ninth-grader Sam Holmberg, sophomore Logan Kevitt and ninth-grader Jack Markstrom also was third.  The 4×400 team of Spaeth, Bartkowicz, Nemecek and sophomore Jessiah Hunter finished in fifth place.

Sophomore Sam Dioszeghy finished fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. The following athletes earned a sixth-place finish: Markstrom (800 meter), Kevitt (3,200 meter), and sophomore Diego Figueroa in the triple jump. Rounding out the point scorers were Spaeth (seventh in the 400 meter dash), sophomore Ashton Demmer (seventh in pole vault) and sophomore Dimitri Anderson (eighth in the long jump).

The team also handed out team awards this week. Winning overall MVP for the boys and girls were Cris Christensen and Ainhoa Toquero. MVP on the track went to Jason Spaeth and Allison Soule. MVP on the field was earned by Sam Diogszeghy and Elizabeth McCue. Most Improved track athletes went to Logan Kevitt and Anna Elliot. Most improved on the field went to Ashton Demmer and DJ Christensen. The Rookies of the Year on the track were earned by Brett Bartkowicz and Avery Olson. Rookies of the Year on the field were earned by Cayden Konrady and Annie Springer. Most Inspirational athletes went to Isaac Miner and Abbie Hollenstein.  Hardest Workers were Will Wallace and Laura Sunnarborg.  The Coaches Award went to Bennett Kelley and Makenna Seitz.

The White Hawks compete next on Wednesday, June 9, and Friday, June 11, in the Section 2AA Track and Field Meet held at Waconia High School.
